Atlantic Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Centre can provide multiple forms of anesthesia to make your procedure as comfortable as possible. Our oral surgeons will review your situation and your preferences during a consultation appointment to help you find the anesthesia option that will best complement your procedure and comfort level.

When it comes to administering anesthesia, oral and maxillofacial surgeons have the highest licensure and training of any dental professional. During their training, they work alongside professional anesthesiologists to understand the different types of anesthesia. Our office is equipped with advanced monitoring equipment to ensure your safety.

Types of Anesthesia for Oral Surgery
Depending on your health history, preferences, and the procedure you are having, you will likely receive one or more of the following types of anesthesia:

• Local anesthesia is used in most dental and facial procedures to numb the area of surgery. If you receive a local anesthetic only, you will remain awake during your procedure, but you will not feel any pain in the area that the anesthetic was administered. You will be able to drive yourself home once your procedure is completed.
• IV sedation is generally for more involved or lengthy procedures. It is administered through an intravenous line, which will be applied by your surgeon or another qualified specialist. IV sedation/anesthetic allows patients to go into a sleep-like state during the procedure and wake up once everything is finished. Most patients find that when they receive IV sedation, their procedure is over before they even know it has begun. You will need to be driven home and cared for by a responsible adult after your surgery is over.
• General anesthesia is usually reserved for more extensive procedures. Currently it is used for hospital-based procedures such as serious facial or dental surgeries. You will need a responsible driver to bring you home after your procedure.

Our entire team is committed to making you feel as comfortable as possible for your procedures at our practice. You will be given complete instructions on how to prepare for your procedure well before your surgery date. In general, local anesthesia alone requires little to no preparation, and you may eat a light meal before your procedure. IV and general anesthesia have more extensive guidelines, and you may not consume any foods or liquids for at least six hours or more prior to your surgery. If you have one or more missing or failing teeth, and you are healthy enough to undergo minor dental surgeries like tooth extractions, you may be a candidate for dental implants. In some cases, bone loss has occurred in the jaw, making dental implant placement impossible without a bone grafting procedure. Schedule an appointment with one of our oral and maxillofacial surgeons to learn whether or not dental implants are right for you. One of our surgeons will collaborate with you, and your dentist, to help identify the most appropriate and suitable treatment option for each patient’s unique situation.

Each patient’s exact recovery time will differ depending on the number of implants they have placed, the quality of bone left in the jaw, and their body’s regenerative capabilities. Generally speaking, dental implants take between three and six months to fully heal. This healing time is necessary to allow the bone surrounding your new implants to integrate with the implant posts. Three months may seem like a long time, but the three- to six-month estimate is only for full chewing capability. Most patients are back to their normal routines just a few days after the procedure, although a soft foods diet may be necessary for some time

The vast majority of patients relate that a lifetime of healthy-looking, functional teeth is well worth the wait during the healing period. Many patients have their dentist make removable temporary teeth so they will not have to be without teeth while the dental implant sites heal.

Once your surgical sites have healed, the dental implants will feel nearly identical to your natural teeth, causing no discomfort whatsoever; however, patients may experience some discomfort the first few days after surgery. Your oral surgeon may provide you with pain medication to relieve these symptoms. You will also be given post-operative instructions to make sure your recovery goes as smoothly as possible.

In general, if you feel soreness or pain (almost like teething) in the back of your jaw, or if you notice swelling or soreness around the gums, your wisdom teeth may be growing in inappropriately. If the tooth becomes impacted or infected, you may also notice an unpleasant taste or smell associated with the infected teeth

It is important to note that it is not always possible to determine whether your wisdom teeth are growing in without the help of a professional. Seeing a dental professional before you notice any symptoms can prevent complications like impaction or infection.

If your wisdom teeth are growing straight without damaging any adjacent structures, they may not need to be removed. The only way to be certain of your situation is to have a dental exam that includes X-rays of the mouth. Even if wisdom teeth seem straight initially, they may change course at later development stages. It is therefore important to attend regular dental exams while your wisdom teeth develop (between the ages of 12 and 25).

Most dental professionals recommend having wisdom teeth removed earlier when the teeth are smaller and easier to extract (around ages 15–19), but every individual is different, and the right time for you may be later or earlier.

After your wisdom teeth are removed, there will be empty tooth sockets where your teeth used to be. Usually, these surgical sites take a week or two to heal completely, but most patients can resume their normal schedules after just a few days.

The day of surgery, you may have some minor residual bleeding, and this usually subsides after a few hours. You can use moist gauze or damp tea bags to apply light pressure to the surgical site. The first couple of days after surgery, you will probably need to eat soft foods. You can start incorporating more chewy or hard foods as you feel more comfortable (usually after a couple of days). Some patients experience some swelling for the first couple of days after surgery. This is normal and should go down by day three or four. Our patients are encouraged to follow our post-operative instructions carefully so that the recovery period can be made as comfortable as possible.

During the removal procedure, patients will receive a local anesthetic (“freezing”) to prevent discomfort and ensure that our patients stay as comfortable as possible. Most patients undergo wisdom teeth removal under IV anesthesia, allowing them to be pleasantly unaware throughout the procedure.

After the procedure is complete, the local anesthesia will often still be in effect for a few hours leaving the mouth feeling numb. You will be given a prescription for pain medication to help control any discomfort once the anesthetic wears off. It is normal to experience the most swelling and discomfort; between 48–72 hours after the surgery. Most patients find that the discomfort subsides soon after. Additional recovery time may be necessary for adult patients. Taking your pain medication before the local anesthetic wears off and continuing to take it for the first 48 hours is an excellent way to help reduce and prevent pain. Our team will do everything possible to ensure that you are comfortable throughout your procedure and recovery.

Most patients experience some swelling and discomfort for a few days to a week following surgery. You may need to follow a soft food diet during the initial healing phase. Full recovery and integration of the implants into the bone may take several months before your permanent teeth are placed.
